An exhibition titled “Estonian Flag 140” has been set up in the staircase display cases of the Research Library.
On September 29, 1881, the Vironia student corporation (later known as EÜS), which grew out of the so-called Kalevipoeg Evenings in Tartu, chose blue, black, and white as their flag colors.
On June 4, 1884, the Estonian Students’ Society consecrated the blue-black-white flag in the hall of the Otepää parsonage. From that point on, the age of the tricolor is counted.
At the Estonian Song Festival in 1896, numerous choirs appeared with the blue-black-white flag, despite the Russian Tsarist authorities banning the use of the tricolor.
… you will see these and many other fascinating facts when you come to view the exhibition.
The Estonian flag is beautiful and ours – wave it proudly on the flag’s birthday and on other important occasions!
The exhibition was curated by Jüri Trei (Estonian Flag Society) and Kadri Laur (Head Specialist of Reader Services).
The exhibition is open until August 23.
