Borrowing and returning books

All patrons with (completed or ongoing) secondary or higher education have the right to borrow items from our libraries. Items can be borrowed from the Academic Library (Rävala ave 10) circulation desk on the 2nd floor or the Study Centre (Narva rd 29) circulation desk or self-service machines. You can order items to the smart locker (Rävala ave 10, free service) or by courier or to Omniva parcel machine (paid service) to a suitable location in Estonia. You can have up to 20 borrowed items at once.

Requesting items for loan

  • from the online catalogue ESTER: you can order materials with the status “available”. Log in to your My ESTER account and choose the desired pick-up location. Once your order is ready, you will be notified by email.
  • at service desks: submit a request form with the necessary details (call number, title, author, and for periodicals: year, issue number, and date), along with your name.

Loan period

  • Most items from our stacks and reading areas can be borrowed for up to 31 days. Study materials usually have a loan period of 14 days.
  • Textbooks can be borrowed from the Study Centre for 62 or 31 days by TLU students, and for 31 days by other patrons. High-demand textbooks and other essential study materials, marked accordingly, are loaned to all patrons for 14 days. If there is no waiting list, the loan period for textbooks can be renewed up to 4 times.
  • Patrons with a secondary education (whether completed or ongoing) can borrow items for 14 days. Items can be renewed up to two times as long as they are not on hold for any other patrons.

Placing a hold

You can place a hold on an item that has been loaned out or is currently in the new acquisitions display:

When a book you have placed a hold on is ready for pickup, you will receive a notification via email. The book will be kept in your name in the smart locker or hold shelf for up to 5 days.

Returning books

You can return borrowed items

  • at any of our library circulation desks
  • at any of our self-service machines
  • at the 24/7 self check-in machine
  • through Solaris Omniva parcel machine (paid service)

To return borrowed items through Omniva’s parcel machine, please register your parcel using Omniva e-service or at the nearest parcel machine. Select Tallinna Solaris Keskuse pakiautomaat as the recipient address and Tallinn University Academic Library as the recipient name. Add 53 04 69 83 as the phone number and kojulaenutus@tlulib.ee as the email. To send your parcel, you have to pay the delivery fee either at the parcel machine or online, scan the barcode, set the parcel in the locker and press “Confirm” on the screen.
Please note that delivery may take a few days and we can only mark the book as returned once it has arrived.

Overdue fines:

  • €0.03 per overdue day for items with a 31- or 62-day loan period
  • €0.13 per overdue day for items with a 3- or 14-day loan period

Compensation for lost or damaged items:

To replace or recompense a lost item, turn to the Academic Library or Study Centre circulation desks. If there is also an overdue fine, this must be paid on top of the compensation.
